Last-Minute DragonConning - Destiny Hunter Cosplay WIP

Image
UPDATE 2/7/23: What a fun time! Having finished my two DragonCon cosplays with some weeks to spare apparently made me look very available to help someone mere days before we leave for Atlanta. There won't be a free knitting or crochet pattern this week, pals - because I have been spending every waking hour working on someone else's costume - a hunter from Destiny . Thankfully, she had fabricated most everything already and just brought it over. She also had a (horribly made) gun molded, which I'll rant about in a later post. My job has largely been painting, which is something I enjoy. I also sewed a cloak. I don't enjoy sewing, but I'm pleased enough with it. I've been watching Project Runway , which has instilled me with confidence? I did some draping shit, which looks alright. Today, because we have reached the eleventh hour, I've been doing assembly of some of the pieces and still painting. Painting. Painting. I may or may not have put more work int...

Dragon*Con 2015: Crochet Cosplay WIP...Sailor Saturn Pleated Skirt + More!

Image
UPDATE 2/5/23: This is a good post except I didn't include any links to, you know, my money-making shop . I've wanted to do some sort of Sailor Moon cosplay since before I knew what cosplay was. I thought about being Sailor Mercury for Halloween some years ago, but then I didn't. I kept getting sidetracked by other ideas, running out of time and all that good stuff that makes for nice excuses to put shit off until the next year and the next. I've also wanted to make some sort of ridiculous costume completely out of yarn for many, many years as well. Crochet cosplay would be the epitome of my yarncrafting - my yarncraft magnum opus. I dabbled for a while with the idea of crochet armor and making an old school WoW armor set. I wanted to make big, absurd, stuffed crochet shoulder pieces mostly. I was leaning toward the Lawbringer set, which is hilarious and stupid-looking and yellow AKA my least favorite color in the world. I do still want to, one day, crochet Lawbrin...

DragonCon: The Recovery

Update 2/1/23: I have nothing to add to this post. I just want to acknowledge that I looked at it while I was looking at all of my other old posts. Take a look at my current Etsy inventory! MAN, I FEEL LIKE I GOT HIT BY THE MARTA. I met some cool people this year, including another girl that whipped up an awesome Zer0 suit (whose name I have of course forgotten), and I had a run in with Tricia Helfer in the Marriott. Here are some pictures. I'll link to the "official" Borderlands photoshoot pics as soon as they're up. If you were unaware, I'm really short. I also seem to put myself next to tall people which exacerbates this fact. On the left is Caitlin from Contagious Costuming as X-23.  Here is the other Zer0 I talked to (to the right) and some pictures from the photoshoot. I'm pretty sure we were discussing our sword construction techniques. She was also much taller than me. My handler only snapped a few pics at the photoshoot. If I take my...

Some Updates!

UPDATE 2/1/23: This is another thing I am very proud of. I really want to get back into cosplay. I always had a great time at DragonCon. I'm sort of old now and I do not care for the youngsters. lol If you're here, then go take a look at my Etsy inventory or visit my Ko-Fi page !   I'll get back to my regular posting of WIP Wednesdays and hopefully some more Free Pattern Fridays after Dragon*Con! Also after Dragon*Con I'll be doing TWO giveaways. There will be one on Facebook and one on Tumblr, so you'll have two chances to win (but you can't win both!). I've already gotten started on some of the giveaway items in the downtime I have between painting sections of my Zer0 suit. Speaking of the Zer0 suit - here are some pictures of the details! I'm currently finishing up work on the back then I'm doing the head last. I'm also working on the class mods that go on his elbows and a Storm Front grenade. I'll also have The Bee for my shiel...

FREE Katniss Cowl-Shawl-Shoulder-Thing Pattern

UPDATE 2/1/23: I skimmed this during my great blog housekeeping mission of 2023 and it looks good! It is at least a good starting point for anyone trying to make this thing! If you want to drop me a few dollars on Ko-Fi then it's appreciated so I can keep doing free stuff! Here's the complete pattern from start to finish of that mysterious article of clothing Katniss is wearing at the beginning of Catching Fire. Is it s half-vest? Is it a weird stole? Is it a cowl? Is it a strange scarf with an arm-hole? Whatever it is, people seem to like it. I made one as a commission for a friend's cosplay and I documented the adventure. There are definitely lots of ways to tweak this pattern that I, of course, thought of after I'd finished. Feel free to use this however you would like and make modifications as you see fit. I'd appreciate a link back either to this post or to my  Etsy shop ! I hope you can also understand what I'm attempting to communicate as well. My f...

Zer0's Sword AKA How Not To Make A Prop

Image
UPDATE 2/1/23: This is actually a very good post and I'm really proud of this messy, disaster of a project. I honestly had no idea what I was doing. All these years later of course I can think of 9786 things I would do different to improve it.   Going back over these posts really makes me want to get back into cosplaying again. Maybe one day I'll go to DragonCon again! Until then, check out my Ko-Fi page and buy things from me on Etsy !   As long as you don't look too closely at this sword it looks pretty good. The EL wire also really helps to distract from all of my epic screw ups. This sword is definitely a Monet (it's really pretty from far away, but when you get up close it's urrrghhh). Yay for self-deprecation and Clueless references! My goal for all of my cosplay is always to make things as cool as possible for as cheap as possible. For this sword the only things I technically bought where a sheet of acrylic, the EL wire, a can of spray paint and som...

Finishing the Katniss Cowl-Thing

Image
UPDATE 2/1/23: If you're here then what you probably want is actually the finished version of this pattern, which is here . I don't know why I didn't update this to include a new link to the finished version after I did the completed post lol Listen, go to my Ko-Fi and also visit my Etsy shop . Buy things. Give me money so that I can keep doing things for free. If I have to get a real job then that means there will be no free patterns because real jobs make me crippling depressed and I have no time to do things I enjoy. When I do have time to do things I enjoy, all of the happiness has been sucked out of me and I do not have the energy to do things I enjoy.  I wrapped up the the Katniss cowl commission this weekend. It turned out to be less work than I'd anticipated in my previous post and I'm pretty excited about it. I almost want to make one for myself to wear around for laughs. It's comfortable and also seems to be durable. I tested it thoroughly by wearin...

Zer0's Sword WIP

UPDATE 1/27/23: I don't have much new to say about this except that I had no idea what I was doing, but holy shit, I did do it. I mostly did it with trash from my literal trash, and I did a darn good job. This makes me want to get back into cosplay. I just don't have time at the moment because here I am trying to re-establish my internet presence after abandoning my hopes and dreams for three years. While I'm here though, let me leave you with some IMPORTANT links: Etsy Ravelry Ko-Fi   I'll make a more detailed post once I finish this thing. Much has gone wrong (largely due to user error and my strange inability to read numbers on a ruler). This is just a look at what's happening so far. In the dark it doesn't actually look as green as it does in the picture - it's totally aqua, dammit. I swear. I need to run the EL wire down the edge of the blade and finish up the hilt, which will be covered in felt and painted appropriately in Borderland's style lik...
